Preparing for Your Adventure

What to Bring and What to Expect onboard the Tasman Explorer with SEA Fiordland

Embarking on a journey onboard the Tasman Explorer in Fiordland, is an epic adventure. There are some common questions that we get asked and we will happily answer.

This guide will help you prepare for your trip, detailing what to bring and what to expect as you explore one of New Zealand’s most stunning and remote regions.

What to Bring

Clothing and Footwear

To be honest you don’t need too many different outfits and the general consensus is that our clients overpack.

But first things first, boats do not have a heap of space and nor do helicopter’s so please pack in a soft shell case.

When packing for your voyage aboard the Tasman Explorer, it is crucial to pack appropriately for the unpredictable weather conditions of Fiordland.

Consider packing the following:

  • Waterproof jacket and pants: Essential for staying dry during frequent rain showers.

  • Warm layers: Wool is a great material for retaining heat, even when wet. A beanie or woollen hat is good to have on hand.

  • In the warmer months, long sleeve tops and leggings can help protect you from sandflies

  • Comfortable walking shoes and/or gumboots plus some slides are handy

  • Casual clothing for relaxing onboard

  • Sun protection like a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are necessary to protect you from the UV rays.

  • A bug head net can be ideal especially around the shores of the Fiords in the warmer months.

  • We are limited with weight for helicopter flights so aim for your softshell luggage to be around 20kg (this will be confirmed individually to each group)

Personal Items

Ensure you have all the personal items you might need for the duration of your trip. These include:

  • Medications: Bring any prescription medications you require, as well as seasickness remedies if you are prone to motion sickness. It would be unlikely to get sea sick whilst cruising the Fiords but if your journey entails some open waters (for example a transfer from Doubtful Sound to Breaksea Sound), then these can be handy to have. We also have these onboard.

  • Toiletries: Basic toiletries, such as toothbrush, toothpaste, and personal hygiene products.

  • Camera: To capture the breathtaking scenery and wildlife.

  • Any special treats you enjoy and BYO alcohol

  • Free Divers – please bring your own wetsuit, mask, snorkel, fins etc. We will supply your weights and weight belt.

  • Scuba Divers – we provide your dive tanks, weights and weight belts. Please bring your own serviced gear required for scuba.

  • In terms of wetsuits – our staff dive in their 5mm suits and are comfortable. The water temperatures are around 12 degrees in Winter and may warmup slightly in Summer.

  • Hunters – please bring your rifle, gun licence and a trigger lock. Ensure you have your hunting permit.

    Optional:

  • Binoculars: Useful for spotting distant wildlife and scenic vistas.

Documents and Essentials

Our office will ensure all documentation is in place prior to departure.

Cash and credit cards are not necessary while onboard. This may be one of the only holidays where no daily spending money is required!

Emergency contact information: Our office keeps a list of emergency contacts and important phone numbers whilst you are onboard

What to Expect

Departure

If you are travelling, we recommend you fly into Queenstown or Invercargill Airport.

From there, you are required to get yourself to Te Anau or Manapouri.

If you need assistance with transfers, please contact Emma in the office.

You will either be travelling inbound to Supper Cove (Usually), via a 30 minute scenic helicopter flight (which is amazing by the way) and return via Deep Cove in Doubtful Sound on a bus over the Wilmot Pass and boat transfer over Lake Manapouri.

OR

A boat transfer over Lake Manapouri/bus over the Wilmot Pass to Deep Cove in Doubtful Sound then return from Supper Cove (Usually), via a 30 minute scenic helicopter flight (Which is amazing by the way)

OR

Inbound and Outbound via a 30 minute scenic helicopter flight.

This will come down to SEA Fiordland organising the logistics and whether you are at the start, middle or end of a group of back to back bookings. We will inform you when finalising your trip details.

The helicopter will land on the vessel and you are to follow all crew instructions.

Generally speaking and this will be confirmed individually for each trip, the following applies:

Inbound helicopter flights – be at the hanger by 9.30am on the day of your departure for an 11am flight (weather dependent)

Inbound via boat/bus – be at Pearl Harbour Manapouri by 7am on the day of departure for a 7.30am departure via the Realnz boat. Disembark the Realnz boat with your luggage and jump onto the Realnz Bus to travel to Deep Cove. This is about a 2 hour journey.

Outbound via helicopter or bus/boat – you will be back at the Hanger or Pearl Harbour by midday on your departure date.

There is parking available at both the Hanger and Pearl Harbour to leave your vehicle while you are away.

Weather and Conditions

We commonly get asked when the best time to go to Fiordland is and to be honest there is no right or wrong time to go.

Fiordland is known for its variable weather, so be prepared:

  • Rain: Fiordland receives high rainfall, so expect wet conditions.

  • Temperature: Temperatures can vary, with cooler conditions in the mornings and evenings.

  • The summer months provide more daylight hours

  • The winter months can provide some lovely calm weather.

But at the end of the day, the weather gods decide what we will be given on what day/month, so we embrace that and work hard to give you an epic experience no matter what the weather brings!

Health and Safety

Your safety and well-being are paramount during your journey. Here are some tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip:

  • Follow crew instructions: The crew is trained to ensure your safety, so always follow their guidance.

  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water, especially during excursions.

  • Wear appropriate gear: Use the right clothing and equipment for each activity to stay safe and comfortable.

  • Be mindful of wildlife: Respect the natural habitat and maintain a safe distance from animals.

  • There is all safety equipment onboard the vessel
