Explore this epic playground with Matt Wells.
Matt Wells is best known as "Nomadic Kayak Fishing" — a New Zealand fishing YouTuber and content creator who lives out of a van, self-films kayak fishing missions around NZ's coast, and lives fairly off-grid off the land.
He went viral in February 2025 after an eight-minute encounter where a large great white shark stalked his kayak off Cape Reinga while he was fishing for kingfish. He handled it calmly, paddled to safety, and the footage/interviews (Today Show, Surfer, The Inertia, Kayak Angler, etc.) made him a recognisable name well beyond the fishing world — a second shark-swarm encounter a few months later added to that.

Black coral: Fiordland's real natural wonder. Fiordland's black coral is mostly Antipathella fiordensis. Despite the name, the living colony is actually white — only its internal skeleton is black. Black coral is normally a deep-sea species found hundreds of metres down, but in Fiordland it grows in shallow water, at depths of only 15–50 metres.
